What Should I Expect from an Oriental Rug Cleaning Service?
If you’ve never had a rug professionally cleaned before, you might be wondering what actually happens. Do they clean it in your home? Do they take it somewhere? Can they remove every stain?
After decades in the cleaning industry, specializing in fine fabrics and oriental rugs, I’ve learned that the best thing we can do for customers is explain the process honestly. When people understand what’s involved, they feel more confident trusting someone with their rugs.
Here’s what you should expect from a professional rug cleaning service.
It Starts With a Conversation
Before we ever touch a rug, we want to understand three things:
- Your concerns
- What type of rug we’re working with
- Your timeline
Most of the time this begins with a phone call. We’ll ask for photos of the rug so we can see its condition and provide a preliminary estimate.
If there are multiple items or concerns, sometimes it’s better for us to visit the home first and do a proper evaluation.
Once we arrive to pick up the rug, we’ll walk through the initial inspection with the customer when possible and have them sign a release before we remove the rug.
A Proper Inspection Matters
When the oriental rug arrives at our facility, we perform a second inspection. We often examine rugs under specialty lighting (such as a blacklight) to identify:
- Stains
- Pet urine contamination
- Color damage
- Fiber issues
- Previous cleaning attempts
If we discover some new issue or have a question, we always communicate it to the customer before proceeding.
Transparency matters—especially when it comes to oriental rugs. These pieces can reveal unexpected conditions once cleaning begins, such as hidden dye instability, prior damage, or embedded soils. In contrast, machine-made rugs constructed from synthetic materials typically present fewer surprises; however, they often do not clean up as well and may retain a dull or worn appearance even after thorough cleaning.
The First Step: Removing Dry Soil
One of the biggest misconceptions people have is that rug cleaning starts with water.
It doesn’t.
The first real step is dry soil removal, often called rug dusting. Rugs can hold pounds of embedded dust, sand, and debris. If you skip this step and go straight to washing, you’re essentially turning that dirt into mud.
Proper dusting removes as much loose debris as possible before the washing stage.
Testing Comes Before Cleaning
Before we begin washing an oriental rug, we always perform colorfastness testing, or color transfer testing.
This helps us determine whether dyes may bleed during the cleaning process. Some fibers, particularly delicate ones, require special handling.
Knowing this beforehand allows us to choose the safest cleaning method.
The Washing Process
Once the rug is prepared, the cleaning begins.
Depending on the condition of the rug, the process usually includes:
- Urine and Odor neutralization baths for pet odors (If needed)
- Rug flushing to remove excessive contaminants
- Appropriate cleaning solutions are carefully selected and applied based on the specific fiber type and construction of the rug.
- Thorough rinsing to ensure complete removal of soils, residues, and cleaning agents.
After thorough rinsing, the rug is placed in a centrifuge to extract the majority of the water. While some may consider this a luxury in the rug cleaning industry, we view it as an essential part of our process.
This dramatically shortens drying time and helps prevent issues like dye migration or browning.
The rug is then hung to dry.
Final Cleaning and Grooming Your Precious Oriental Rug
Once the rug has dried, we perform a quality control evaluation.
If needed, we’ll perform an additional topical cleaning on any remaining areas and make sure the rug smells fresh and clean.
After a final drying period, the rug is rolled and prepared for delivery.
When we return the rug, we groom it in place so it looks its best and make sure the customer is completely satisfied.
Managing Expectations Is Important
One of the biggest misconceptions about rug cleaning is that cleaners can perform miracles.
Sometimes people wait too long before calling us. In other cases, well-intentioned DIY cleaning attempts can actually make stains worse.
Our approach is to set realistic expectations and focus on what truly matters:
- Cleaning
- Neutralizing contaminants
- Sanitizing the rug
When stain removal exceeds expectations, customers are pleasantly surprised.
How to Tell If an Oriental Rug Cleaning Company Is Good
There are several things that separate a professional rug cleaning service from a poor one:
- Do they do proper rug dusting before washing ?
- Are they able to correctly identify fibers (wool, viscose, cotton, synthetics) ?
- Do they do colorfastness testing (sometimes this can take over night) ?
- Do they actually apply proper urine contamination treatment (sometimes takes days, depending on severity) ?
- Do they have large enough rug-plant equipped with specialized equipment like wash pits, centrifuges, dust tumblers, blacklights, and a controlled climate environment for rug drying?
- Do they have a variety of cleaning agents to cover various scenarios?
- Do they have Lorrin White, who brings over 15 years of experience providing careful, specialized cleaning for oriental rugs.
But if I had to choose just one thing, it would be this:
Honesty.
A good rug cleaner will tell you what can be restored—and what cannot.
